About Daniel and the Triathletes
Daniel:
Daniel is a 5th grade student who was diagnosed with leukemia at the young age of 6. He has been battling this disease every since. He is a bright, funny, and kind person who enjoys science, engineering, and art. Even though he missed almost an entire year of school, he still managed to get into the Talented and Gifted program. Last year, he was chosen by The Make a Wish Foundation to receive both a special trip and party. He chose to go to Hawaii with his family to swim with the dolphins. He also took this as an opportunity to thank his classmates for their support by throwing them a giant pizza party.
Karren Gilliland:
At the age of 26, Karren was diagnosed with Stage 3 Colon Cancer. Now she is in her 3rd season of training for Olympic distance triathlons with Team in Training. This would not have been possible without the excellent medical care and advanced research that has been done for this type of cancer. She is very thankful to have her health, and is using this as an opportunity to help raise money for cancer research, so that others do not have to go through what she did and may one day have the opportunity to compete in endurance events too.

Rebekah Dykhorst:
Rebekah is training for her first triathlon this season in honor of her cousin, Kaitlyn Jankovsky. She is her greatest inspiration for raising money and awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Kaitlyn was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 14 years old. She has been undergoing chemotherapy for 15 months and has had many complications, but she is still fighting. She believes that training and fundraising is the least she can do to give back and help others who struggle with this diagnosis. Although this is her first triathlon, she has been fundraising along side her partner, Monique for many years. Monique, who is a campaign manager for TNT, has taught her everything she needs to know about fundraising. She is very excited about this journey and completing Lavaman this April!
